Bled, Slovenia

Bled Castle

After a quick 20 miniute drive across the Austrian-Slovenian border we arrived in Bled staying in a Hostel directly under the Castle. We are the only people staying here so we have a whole hostel to ourselves! It's the off-season but you would never know it from the beautiful sunny weather...
Roisin looking out towards snow-capped peaks after
viewing the castle's printing press and blacksmith work-space.
Roisin climbing the castle walls
The view down onto the lake with the church on the small island.
One small row boat is making its way to the church to ring its 'wishing bell'.
The church looks spectacular surrounded by snow covered mountains.
Spent the day walking, from Bled Castle to and through Vintgar Gorge.
To our surprise its waters were clear and emerald. The prettiest gorge we've ever seen.

We didn't have to pay because the
gorge is 'closed' for the off season
Kit overlooking a small waterfall.

St Katrina chapel at the end of
 our walk with views down
 onto Zasip and Bled villages
The largest waterfall at the end of the Gorge - spectacular

It looks like Vintgar Gorge is probably even more spectacular in winter with a good flow of water than it would be in "the season". So free access sounds a real bargain. Did you go to ring the wishing bell in the island church?

We skipped the church - I didn't much fancy being 'romantically' rowed to the church- mostly because clearly I should be the one rowing... The only thing about 'the season' is that you can jump in (where deathly waterfalls aren't threatening) and we were tempted, even in the cool shaded-gorge January weather, to do so, so a summer swim would be nice... but no people is better.

Spectacular country - I can see why you loved it and want to go back one day . it's got everything when it comes to scenery. J
